The Almanack #11: Execute first, refine later

One of the biggest mindsets that holds people back is thinking they need to have everything planned to perfection. They won't publish their first YouTube video because they're afraid it's going to be trash (advice - it is! That's the point of a first video!). They won't go to the gym because they're afraid of the way people will look at them when they start off. They don't submit that job application because their CV isn't perfect yet.

The best performers are always the ones who take action first, and then refine later. When I published my first tech video almost 2 years ago, I had no clue what I was doing - the whole video was shot on my iPad, and edited using iMovie. Funnily enough that video's manage to rack a couple thousand views, but the point is I knew that first video was going to be cringe, and that I'd refine my skill over time.

So I don't want to ever hear you use perfection as an excuse not to get started. Start now, refine later.

Monthly favourites

  • Casino Royale - one of my favourite Bond films in the whole series. I've recently started reading the book, and it's a pretty good read. Set in a different era to the movie, although I'd say the Bond from the novels is closer aligned to Craig's and Dalton's interpretations
  • Midjourney - this AI tool lets you generate images with short commands. There's also some social features that let you share and see other people's prompts
  • Comet - Perplexity's new web browser
